BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The City of Bellingham is taking public comment on a proposal to open a temporary camping site for homeless people in the parking lot of the What-Comm 911 dispatch center on Alabama Street.
Safe Haven would be a drug and alcohol free site of up to 24 tents operated by the non-profit homeless advocacy group HomesNOW.
The group says the goal is to provide a safe and stable place for homeless people to live while they actively seek permanent housing.
HomesNOW has operated a temporary camping site behind City Hall since the first of the year but its 90 day permit expires in April.
Safe Haven would also have a 90 day permit, with a possible 30 day extension.
Send comments to Lisa Pool with the City Planning Department by March 7, by email at lapool@cob.org or by phone at 360-778-8390.
