BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Bellingham high school students and teachers are using 3D printers to churn out masks for essential workers.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) teachers at Squalicum and Bellingham High Schools, Riley Liddle and Paul Clement, saw the need and researched designs online and found one that Liddle says is “super comfortable.”
The 3D printers make the frame for the mask and a piece of an actual surgical mask is used for the filter, making four masks out of one surgical mask.
Staff and students are able to make 30 masks per day with printers running at Sehome, Squalicum and Bellingham High Schools and at Kulshan Middle School.
They donated 80 masks to Whatcom Unified Command on April 7th.
Liddle says they can use more elastic for the masks.
