BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Bellingham man is accused of strangling his Uber driver while shouting racial slurs.

The incident is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Bellingham Police Lieutenant Claudia Murphy says officers were dispatched to the 1400 block of Barkley Boulevard just after 4 AM Thursday.

She says an Uber driver had fled his vehicle on foot to call 911 after his passenger, later identified as 22-year-old Grifin Sayers, grabbed and squeezed his throat and made racially-biased comments about his ethnicity.

Sayers was arrested and booked into the Whatcom County Jail.
