BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A local woman whose son served with the U.S. Coast Guard is asking the community to help USCG members stationed in Bellingham as the partial federal government shutdown continues.
Susan Lignell says a family “adopted” her son when he was stationed in Alaska and she’s done the same for the men and women stationed here.
“I provide stockings and Easter baskets and meals . . . I’m just trying to do what a mom does,” she says.
The Salvation Army is making their facility off Northwest available to collect donations on Friday, February 1 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Lignell hopes to fill a couple of trucks with food for people and pets along with other items like laundry soap or gift cards.
The Coast Guard is the one branch of the military that isn’t funded during the government shutdown.
