SEATTLE, WASH. – Bertha, the tunnel-boring machine, broke through as thousands watched in person and online today.

It broke through a concrete wall at the end of its nearly 2-mile journey.

Bertha is a few years late to the party having broken down not long after it started drilling in 2013.

The $3.1 billion dollar tunnel will replace the aging Alaskan Way Viaduct, and is scheduled to open in 2019.

Advocates say a tunnel opens up the waterfront to new development, but critics slammed it as a vanity project.
