BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A bicycle rider was reported to be in critical condition after he collided with a car early Wednesday.

It happened on Byron Avenue near Samish Way, just before 4 a.m.

Bellingham Police Lt. Bob Vander Yacht said a 69-year-old woman driving a Nissan Titan pickup turned into the path of the oncoming bicyclist.

Vander Yacht said the bicyclist was wearing bright clothing and had a functional light on the bicycle.

The 58-year-old man crashed into the pickup, and suffered a head injury.  Vander Yacht said the bicyclist wasn’t wearing a helmet.

Vander Yacht said the man is at  PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, and in “critical condition.”

Vander Yacht said the accident is under investigation. He did say there was “no impairment whatsoever” in the case of the pickup driver.

He added that the City of Bellingham is in the midst of the Travel with Care campaign, which seeks to educate the public about driver, pedestrian and cyclist safety.
