OLYMPIA, Wash. – A bill setting a target for only electric vehicles to be sold in the state by 2030 has passed both chambers of the Washington Legislature.

Clean Cars 2030 would also apply to cars bought out of state and imported to Washington.

The measure is written more as a set of goals than strict regulation, so implementation is still up in the air.

It would not go into effect until 75% of registered vehicles in the state are enrolled to pay a “road use tax” rather than a fuel tax.

The bill, which sets a target date 5 years ahead of California, now heads to Governor Inslee for his signature.
