WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – A Birch Bay woman was arrested January 25th on charges that she stole more than $100,000 from a vulnerable elderly woman.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says the financial adviser for the 78-year-old victim noticed large amounts of money being transferred from the victim’s account and became concerned when he could not reach her.
The woman told investigators her caregiver, Kimberly Stavig, may have accessed her checks and credit cards.
On the victim’s bank statement detectives found hundreds of ATM withdrawals, large transfers and large purchases, that they say they were then able to link to Stavig using surveillance photos and delivery slips.
Investigators say Stavig manipulated the victim into feeling Stavig is the only one who can take care of her.
