BURLINGTON, Wash. — A black bear spotted in the area near Home Depot in Burlington had police and state officials on alert yesterday.

The Skagit Valley Herald reports an employee noticed the bear in a tree at about 6 AM Thursday and Department of Fish & Wildlife officers arrived soon after.

Officers say the bear showed no signs of wanting to come down amid the bustle of shoppers and drivers.

They were hoping to lure the bear into a trap with seeds, bacon grease and honey to haul him east, possibly to the Ross Lake area.

People have been speculating that this is the same black bear that’s been spotted swimming from island to island in the San Juans, but a Fish and Wildlife officer says it’s hard to tell but it could be the island-hopping bear.
