BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Black Student organizations are demanding change at Western Washington University.
The student leaders issued a detailed statement in light of recent unprovoked murders of Black people in the country, noting that many universities have published statements reflecting their solidarity.
They are urging Western to take direct action beyond posting statements like “Black Lives Matter” on their website and social media.
The students are demanding the university’s student government group, Associated Students, be abolished because they say it does not support the safety and wellbeing of Black students.
They also want school-wide recognition of Black History Month, MLK Day, and Juneteenth as well as a dedicated Black Student Space including a study area, a common area, and a meeting room.
