BLAINE, Wash. — The suspect involved in a single-car collision on I-5 near Blaine Sunday claimed he fell asleep at the wheel.

The State Patrol and Blaine Police responded to the collision at around 5:30 p.m. in which a vehicle struck the median and damaged about 50 yards of cable barrier.

But when police arrived, the vehicle was abandoned.

A Blaine PD spokesperson says officers spotted the suspect’s driver’s license and an empty bottle of peppermint vodka through the broken driver’s side window.

They later contacted the suspect who admitted to crashing and walking away from the scene, claiming he had fallen asleep while driving, but police say he did not answer questions about the bottle of alcohol.
