CHERRY POINT, Wash. – BP is investing millions in its Cherry Point refinery to improve efficiency and increase its production of renewable diesel fuel.

And it expects a big reduction in carbon emissions and an increase in jobs.

It’s investing $169 million in efficiency improvements to the hydrocracker, the heart of the refinery where heat, high pressure and hydrogen are used to turn heavy oil into gas, diesel and jet fuel.

A $55 million project will improve the refinery’s water-based cooling system.

And the company plans to double its output of renewal diesel that’s produced with biomass like vegetable oils and animal fats.

BP says the projects will add 300 jobs over the next three years, and contribute to its goal of being carbon neutral by 2050.
