BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Bellingham officer showed restraint in arresting a man brandishing a metal pipe downtown last Friday.

A police statement says witnesses reported that William Maher shattered a glass door at about 4 p.m.

The responding officer found him swinging the pipe and yelling while people ran from him.

Maher hit the officer with the pipe and they both fell to the ground.

Maher jammed the pipe into the officer’s chest and repeatedly said he would stab and kill the officer before he was finally taken into custody.
