BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Washington’s new paid family leave law takes effect in 2020 but employers have to start preparing for it next year.
Kate DeWeese with the Employment Security Department says businesses and nonprofits alike will have to start collecting data of employee wages and hours in 2019, and reporting it to the state.
When the law is in effect workers who have or adopt a baby, have a sick family member or some other family-related event that requires time off will be able to get up to 12 weeks of paid leave.
The Employment Security Department will hold a free workshop for employers on the law Wednesday, September 26 at 6:00 P.M. at Bellingham Technical College.
