BLAINE, Wash. — Blaine teachers are at risk for layoffs as the school district plans for big budget cuts.
According to The Northern Light, the Blaine School District projects a budget cut of over $1 million next year which they say could require laying off up to six teachers.
The cut comes after lawmakers reduced the amount that districts can collect from local tax levies in 2017 as well as increased costs for mandated programs like audits and assessments.
The district is contractually obligated to notify teachers of possible layoffs by May 15.
