WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. – The Nooksack Tribe says its evictions of disenrolled members from tribal housing has followed proper procedures and a letter from the Bureau of Indian Affairs backs that up.

Tribal leadership has posted a letter online from the BIA’s Portland office that says its personnel have reviewed the tribe’s actions following charges of potential Indian Civil Rights Act and due process violations.

The letter states that nine people being evicted failed to provide proof of eligibility for tribal housing and the tribe has followed due process requirements.

The bureau is not commenting on future actions taken by the tribe, but urges it to treat those who have been disenrolled with respect and dignity.

The Nooksack Tribe says it has 60 people waiting for housing, some of which is currently occupied by the nine disenrolled members.
