California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a bill into law aimed at Amazon and its warehouse working conditions.

The law prohibits what it says are unsafe production quotas for warehouse distribution center workers that prevent them from taking bathroom or rest breaks and interfere with health and safety laws.

San Diego Democrat Lorena Gonzalez sponsored the bill and says “workers aren’t machines.”

She says the state won’t let companies like Amazon “put profits over workers’ bodies…just for same day delivery.”

The law requires the companies to disclose quotas to the state and prohibits them from firing workers for missing quotas that prevent them from taking breaks or for complying with health or safety laws.
