SEATTLE, Wash. (AP) — A Canadian company is looking to land an exploratory gold and copper mining permit in the headwaters of the Skagit River.
Imperial Metals has applied to drill for mineral deposits in the headwater of the Skagit River for as many as five years.
The Seattle Times reported the Skagit is one of the premier salmon-producing rivers in the state, and metals, particularly copper, are toxic to salmon.
Seattle Mayor Durkan wrote the B.C. Premier with concerns on the project, and said in a statement, “Mining in this area would threaten the environment, undermine our investments in salmon and bull trout recovery, and harm the integrity of a watershed that is critical to millions of people in Seattle and our region.”
