OLYMPIA, Wash. — It doesn’t look like you’ll be paying $30 for car tabs any time soon.

The state Supreme Court has unanimously struck down the voter approved Initiative 976 that would have reduced them to that amount but also would have gutted transportation budgets across the state.

The justices said the measure violated the state Constitution’s requirement that initiatives be limited to a single subject and said its description on the ballot was misleading.

Sponsor Tim Eyman spoke to reporters at the Capitol following the ruling and said the idea that voters didn’t know they were voting against light rail and other projects is absurd.

Andrew Villanueve of the Northwest Progressive Institute campaigned against the initiative, but says state lawmakers do need to reform how transportation projects are funded.

A coalition of cities, King County, and Garfield County’s transit agency brought the lawsuit against I-976.
