BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The 2-week closure of Chuckanut Drive at Old Samish Road is officially over.
Crews with the state Department of Transportation closed the section of highway while they removed a culvert on Hoag’s Creek that they say was too small and too high from the surface of the creek to support fish passage.
They replaced it with a much larger culvert that will allow coastal cutthroat trout, steelhead and other aquatic species to use nearly a mile of habitat upstream for the first time in nearly a century.
