BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Chuckanut Mountain Fire is now burning 60 acres on both sides of the Whatcom-Skagit County line.

Firefighters are keeping the flames away from houses, but  the fire was at one point within a 200 yards of one of the four threatened homes.

Janet Pearce with the State Department of Natural Resources said the hot, dry weather is not helping. “It’s difficult to fight the fires that are starting on the west side of the mountains,” Pearce said.

South Whatcom Fire Assistant Chief Rod Topel said local fire districts are working with the DNR to fight the blaze. “We’re actively positioning our resources to where we can best assist the DNR with their objectives as well as protect our community,” Topel said.

Helicopters and planes dumped water on the flames. Over 100 people with the DNR and other agencies, some arriving from as far away as Spokane.
