BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Following the example of Governor Inslee, the Bellingham City Council declared this week Invasive Species Awareness Week.
Mayor Linville says the city is particularly concerned about the effects non-native plants, animals and pathogens have on our local water bodies.
It costs the U.S. about $137 billion per year to prevent, monitor, control and cover damage caused by these invasive species which can threaten the local food chain.
Several programs in Bellingham, the county and statewide work to remove non-native species and replace them with native plants or animals, while also preventing them from entering the area in the first place.
