BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Bellingham City Council wants more information on the safety of technology required for 5g cell service.

5G will rely on “small cell” towers in many places around the city to achieve broad coverage.

Council member Michael Lilliquist told Monday’s meeting that some worry the FCC hasn’t adequately studied possible health effects of radiation from those towers.

He says the city can’t legally use health concerns to block small cell towers but stresses that none have yet been built in Bellingham.

The council did vote unanimously to reach out to local federal lawmakers for information on health investigations the FCC has done on the technology.
