BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A building prepared for COVID-19 quarantines is being partially re-purposed as a temporary shelter for homeless individuals and families.

Bellingham Mayor Seth Fleetwood says the owner of the former Motel 6 on Byron Street has agreed to allow 15 units to be used for temporary shelter.

Whatcom County Councilmember Tyler Byrd has been lobbying for the change.

He says the building would allow for social distancing that wouldn’t be practical in facilities used for temporary shelters in the past.

The mayor’s office says they’re working with homeless service agencies to finalize plans and more information will be released in coming days,
