BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The City of Bellingham is gearing up to begin a new street construction project that will provide the first new I-5 crossing in Bellingham since the 1960s.
Work will begin on the new arterial from James Street to Squalicum Parkway March 1st.
The project will also include lighted sidewalks, bicycle lanes, a stoplight at the Orchard and James Street intersection, a new water main and stormwater collection system.
The project is anticipated to take up to a year to complete.
While there will be minimal impacts to traffic, a portion of the Squalicum Creek Trail where it passes under I-5 will be closed for the duration of the project.
When completed, the trail will be rerouted to a shared use concrete path on the south side of the new street.
The long-planned project is in the City’s Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) with construction funded through the state Department of Transportation.
