BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A Coast Guard air crew rescued a father and son who went missing on a stormy Bellingham Bay Thursday night.

The Coast Guard received a report of a 50-year-old man and his 12- year-old son missing in a 12-foot dinghy in 2-to-3 foot seas and 23 mile per hour winds.

The son had tried to row the dinghy to Boulevard Park from his father’s yacht anchored 100 yards off shore, but he was blown out into the bay.

His father went after him on a kayak and both were reported missing at 8:15 p.m.

A Bellingham Fire marine unit and two Coast Guard craft responded along with the helicopter, which located the man and boy together in the dinghy in north Bellingham Bay.

They had been missing for two and a half hours and were cold and wet but alert and responsive.

They were hoisted aboard the helicopter and taken to medical personnel at Bellingham International Airport.
