PORT ANGELES, Wash. — Port Angeles Coast Guard crews airlifted two people on a beach near Tsusiat Falls, British Columbia who called in a mayday Sunday afternoon.
The Coast Guard reports the two boaters were suffering from hypothermia and were handed off to a Royal Canadian helicopter crew in Neah Bay.
Even though the boaters were in Canadian waters, the Port Angeles crew was closer.
The response took just shy of an hour, with the call being made at 2:20 PM and the aircrew arriving at the Tsusiat Falls beach at 3:13 PM.
The boaters say they were taking on water due to the high surf conditions before they made it back to shore for the pickup.
