BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A Coast Guard boat from Bellingham helped kayakers stranded by high wind and waves west off Lummi Island Tuesday afternoon.

The Coast Guard says a 45-foot boat from Station Bellingham responded at about 5 PM to reports that 11 kayakers were caught in 15 knot winds.

The group from YMCA Camp Orkila on Orcas Island had taken refuge in a cove on Little Sister Island between Orcas and Lummi Island.

They were safely returned to the camp.

The Coast Guard reminds everyone to be aware of weather conditions and tides when embarking on ocean trips.
