LONG BEACH, Wash. — A 40-year-old man surfing near Long Beach Peninsula in southwest Washington on Saturday afternoon had to be rescued after he got caught in strong currents.

The Coast Guard reports three surfers were out in the water when one was swept away and went missing.

Witnesses on shore were able to keep the man in view and helped a helicopter crew keep him in view until they could recover him and get him to medical personnel.
