BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The release of Atlantic salmon into Puget Sound is renewing concerns about a proposed salmon farm.
“There are viruses, and there’s bacteria – the yellow mouth disease – and those can be spread very easily to other fish, wild fish,” said Riley Starks, owner of Bellingham-based commercial fishing company Lummi Island Wild.
The disaster at Cooke Aquaculture’s facility comes as the same company hopes to build another farm in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
Starks worries the operation could harm wild salmon stock and cause other environmental damage.
Cooke Aquaculture says the new site will have state-of-the-art equipment.
