HANFORD, Wash. – The Energy Department says a partially collapsed tunnel containing radioactive waste will be filled with a concrete-like grout.

The tunnel on the Hanford Nuclear Reservation contains wastes left over from the production of plutonium for nuclear weapons.

Workers discovered earlier this month that a portion of the tunnel roof collapsed.

No radioactivity was released.

The Energy Department says most of the tunnel will be filled with grout, which will
stabilize it and help contain radioactivity.
