OLYMPIA, WASH (AP) – Cutting trees to stave off wildfires.

A conservation group cutting down trees to restore a forest near Cle Elum.

It’s not a typical commercial logging operation.

The Nature Conservancy is selectively logging dry forests in the Central Cascades to make thousands of acres of privately owned forestland more resilient against fire, disease and climate change.

The group is weeding out smaller trees that act as kindling for larger fires.

They’re also leaving some bigger older pines that are fire resistant.
