BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada – “Don’t play with your food” is apparently not a direction mother orcas give to their young.
Researchers from Oceanwise, a conservation organization based in British Columbia, were documenting orca interactions with a drone in 2019 and have posted some photos on their Instagram account.
At one point they caught a young orca, “Alder,” balancing a dead salmon on his nose.
When he dropped the fish his mother, “Clio,” would pick it up and drop it back in front of him and he would resume playing with it.
Oceanwise tells Seattle’s “The Stranger” that its just one of the unusual activities they’ve been able to document while doing drone research on Pacific Northwest orca populations.
