WASHINGTON DC (AP) – The conservative Western Governors Association is endorsing the goals of the Endangered Species Act, but they’re also asking Congress to make some changes.

The GOP-dominated association wants states to have a bigger role and clarification on recovery plans for protected animals.

The group includes 14 Republicans, six Democrats and two independents.

Endangered species protection is controversial because it often brings restrictions on mining, oil drilling and agriculture.

The governors say their states benefit economically from healthy species and ecosystems, but also bear the burden of some costs and restrictions.
