MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — A multimillion-dollar project adding two lanes to a popular Skagit County road is underway.

Mount Vernon Public Works Director Esco Bell told the Skagit Valley Herald the project on College Way will reduce bottlenecks in the I-5 underpass which has become the highest-traffic region in the city.

Bell estimates the project to be completed by January 2020, costing about $8 million and says most of the funding will come from county, state and federal governments.

Crews will mostly work at night and on the sides of the road to minimize traffic impacts, but will have to close some lanes eventually to install a water pipe.
