BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A unique “container village” is bringing businesses to Bellingham’s waterfront.

Port of Bellingham Commission member Ken Bell says he got the idea while visiting Christchurch, New Zealand after the city’s historic center had been decimated by an earthquake.

They kept commerce going with shipping containers.

But he says it’s become a fixture in that city, and the commission decided it would be a great way to kickstart development on our waterfront.

Bell says Kulshan Brewing installed the first container this week and food and ice cream vendors are on the way.

He says the first container businesses should be open in a few weeks.
