BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A bridge in the Birchwood neighborhood is sporting a new paint job — in rainbow colors.
City Council member April Barker says the idea to paint the bridge on Northwest at Birchwood Avenue had been percolating for a number of years until local business owner Jared Jones-Valentine of the Barber Shack stepped up and made it happen.
She says about forty businesses and private donations paid for the project and several hundred volunteers were involved, working carefully on the details.
“Anytime you do a project and you get permission from the city you’re certainly ‘stepping it up’ a bit. Folks took real pride in that project, and you can tell,” she says.
There is no official name but many are calling it Birchwood’s Unity Bridge.
