BELLINGHAM, WASH. Whatcom County Councilmembers say some Cherry Point refinery workers might not completely understand the purpose of a fossil fuel export study.

Councilmembers say the $150,000 study is meant to serve as a learning tool for them.

“We’re very attuned to the concerns of the folks out at Cherry Point. Those people have jobs out there,  who’s fears have been stoked by really irresponsible misinformation,” Councilmember Ken Mann says.

Councilmembers say it has nothing to do with limiting exports, curtailing production or shutting down businesses as some opponents have indicated.

The council wants to have a better idea of what they can do about impacts on safety, transportation, the economy and the environment.
