BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Council has decided to ask voters to okay a property tax increase to fund better access to childcare and early learning programs.
The proposal for an increased property tax levy will be on the ballot in November.
It would add about $84 to the annual tax bill for the owner of a property assessed at $480,000.
A proponent of the measure spoke at the council’s June 7th meeting.
“Early learning and care is critical and addressing the shortage in our community benefits everyone,” said the proponent. “From businesses trying to attract and retain workers, to working parents trying to keep jobs, to vulnerable children who benefit from the enrichment that a quality early-learning environment provides.”
The council is asking for community members to help draft both pro and con statements on the proposal.
Those interested are asked to submit their names by 4 p.m. on Friday, July 15.
Names can be submitted by emailing the Council Office at council@co.whatcom.wa.us or calling 360.778.5010
