BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Tightening refinery regulation in Whatcom County will be the topic at a special session of the County Council Thursday.

The discussion will surround Joint Stakeholder Group proposed revisions to the Whatcom County Planning Commission’s recommendations for Cherry Point.

In August, the planning commission published findings supporting amendments limiting future development including for fossil fuel facility expansions and implementing a shoreline management program.

The meeting starts at 3pm Thursday and is viewable online, with full details available on the Cherry Point amendments page of the County website.

The industries active at Cherry Point employed 3,320 people in 2019 at twice the average Whatcom County salary, according to a report by Hart Hodges, director of WWU’s Center for Economic and Business Research.
