BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It’s unlikely that everyone will agree on plans for a new Whatcom County Jail.

People have strong opinions about everything – the size, the location and much more.

But County Executive Jack Louws says negotiators have reached consensus on a proposal.

“The attorneys are still hacking out the details, and I know well enough to say it’s not done until it’s completely done, there’s been a lot of positive movement in bringing this forward to the voters again.”

The city and councils must approve the plan before it heads to voters for final adoption.

Some members of the community and councilmembers are already voicing strong concerns about the proposed size of the lockup.

They say 440 beds are too many, even though that number is less than the 521 beds in a measure that failed at the polls in 2015.
