LUMMI ISLAND, Wash. – Whatcom County is set to receive $25 million dollars from the federal government to buy a new, more environmentally friendly Lummi Island Ferry.
U.S. Representatives Rick Larsen and Suzan DelBene have announced the Department of Transportation has awarded the money as part of last year’s infrastructure bill.
Whatcom County Executive Satpal Sidhu says the grant, along with state and local dollars, will allow the county to buy a new electric battery hybrid ferry and related infrastructure.
The current Whatcom Chief is 60 years old.
