BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The murder case of a Bellingham man accused of shooting his wife has been dismissed.

Charges against 57-year-old Kevin Ralph Heimsoth were dismissed without prejudice because he is severely mentally disabled and unable to stand trial.

Heimsoth was charged with murder and animal cruelty for the shooting deaths of his wife, 58-year-old Lynn Heimsoth, and her pets last December.

Lynn Heimsoth was the principal of Sunnyland Elementary School in Bellingham and her dog was well known to students and staff.

Court proceedings against Kevin Heimsoth had been on hold since February as he recovered from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The prosecutor’s office said it will recharge him with murder should he ever regain competency.
