OAK HARBOR, Wash. — A man is dead following a police shooting in Oak Harbor.
State Patrol Trooper Heather Axtman says 911 received a report of an attempted carjacking near a Safeway store at about 6:30 P.M. on Sunday.
The victim was able to get away and described the suspect as disheveled and bloody, and who looked as though he was reaching for a weapon.
The man then entered a nearby Walmart, brandished a knife, stole ammunition and tried to steal a gun.
He left and was later confronted by police, and an Island County Sheriff’s Deputy fired when the man refused to follow orders.
He died at Whidbey General Hospital.
A multi-agency team is investigating the shooting.
