DEMING, Wash. — Drivers who use Highway 9 through Van Zandt should be prepared for longer commutes starting next week as WSDOT begins replacing the fish passage there.

Crews will replace three small pipes, two of which are near the former Everybody’s Store on Potter Road, with twelve-foot wide box culverts.

A temporary bypass lane was built near the old store to help alleviate traffic for the next month while crews work on the $5.5 million project.

The wider passages are meant to reduce the water flow speed under the road so fish can more easily get through.
