OLYMPIA, WASH. – Legislation that would make it easier to prosecute police officers who use deadly force is not expected to become law this year.
Representative Dave Hayes, a deputy in Snohomish County, says the issue of trust between communities and law enforcement can’t be fixed with a change in state law.
“[It] will not address the problem. [It] will not address the community-wide, state-wide, nation-wide problems that we have with relationships between communities and law enforcement officers,” Hayes says.
The Democratically-controlled State House passed the deadly force bill, but it appears dead in the Republican-controlled Senate.
