OLYMPIA, Wash – The Washington State Department of Health is addressing an increasing number of breakthrough cases among the vaccinated population.

Numbers show a recent 43% increase in breakthrough cases making the total more than 123,000.

That number reflects 2.5% of the 4.8 million fully-vaccinated Washington State residents.

The department says the increase is due in part to the big jump in overall cases caused by the omicron variant.

Experts stress that vaccination is still effective.

Most people with breakthrough cases have had mild or no symptoms and just 3% have had to be hospitalized.
