OLYMPIA, Wash. — The state Department of Ecology is proposing an update in water quality standards to test for E. coli rather than fecal coliform bacteria.

The agency says there are more precise methods than the ones the state currently uses to test water and protect public health.

Several other states and the U.S. EPA have already incorporated them.

The DOE is now accepting public comments on the proposed changes and expect a final decision in October.
