FERNDALE, Wash. — Intalco is working with Ecology to address air pollution issues.

The Washington State Department of Ecology says they recorded relatively high sulfur dioxide levels near the smelter in recent years.

The agency is working with the Ferndale-based aluminum producer Intalco to accurately monitor the sulfur dioxide to comply with federal air quality standards.

Ecology says they don’t believe the current pollution levels pose a threat to nearby residents, but some people living or working near the plant in the last few years may have been exposed to levels exceeding federal standards meant to protect public health.
