BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The county council approved funding for body cameras to be worn by Whatcom County sheriff’s deputies.

Undersheriff Doug Chadwick told The Northern Light all deputies will be wearing the body cams by the end of March 2021.

Sheriff Bill Elfo says the cameras will increase transparency and accountability while also offering enhanced evidence to aid in prosecution.

The sheriff’s office hopes to get the equipment in by the end of the year to ensure time for proper training.
